The Calm Space project is centred on the refurbishment and adaptation of the Old Bar in the main campus in UCC for the purpose of creating an autism-friendly zone in the heart of the campus. As part of the brief, the entire interior was stripped out and new doors, partitions, floor and ceiling finishes, and new furniture was installed, all with the aim of creating a universally accessible space. The design and specification was developed in conjunction with the Disability Support Services and student focus groups, to ensure the space was finely tuned to end-users requirements.

The building fabric was upgraded by installing a breathable internal insulation layer with air tightness membrane and repairing the existing windows where required. The terrazzo flooring in the main stair was carefully restored and returned to its original colours.
